maya and the corn grows ripe
In groups of two, the students read about a particular aspect of Mayan life: architecture, appearance, societal structure, or religion. The students then created a poster that explained and illustrated the information learned. In conjunction with their research in Social Studies, the class also read The Corn Grows Ripe by Dorothy Rhoads. This is the coming of age story of a young Mayan boy. Upon completion of the book, each student detailed the evolution of the main character, Tigre, in a codex (a Mayan book).
